The Hampton Roads Philharmonic is pleased to announce the results of its 8th annual Young Artist Competition. This year’s panel of judges included violinist Simon LaPointe, pianist Dr. Ben Corbin, and HRP Music Director Steven Brindle.
The competition showcased an impressive display of talent, with a notable increase in registrations from the previous year. For the first time, we reached full capacity in competition entries, and the overall level of performance surpassed any previous year.
Every participant who placed demonstrated the technique, musicianship, and stage presence required to perform as a soloist.
We would like to extend our warmest congratulations to all participants for their outstanding performances and announce the following placements.

2024 Competition
Looking ahead to next year, we expect to host the 2024 9th Annual YAC competition in the first or second week of November. Given the increased interest this year, we anticipate reaching full capacity once again. We strongly encourage interested soloists to register early to secure their spot in the competition.
We are working to build this event into what we hope will be a well-regarded opportunity for young soloists inr our music community. In particular, we are working to increase our competition budget which, among other things, will allow us to increase award amounts and, in the future, allow us to program rental works that are outside of the public domain.
We invite all of you to attend the Young Artist Showcase Performance, scheduled for March 10, 2024, at 1:30 PM at the American Theatre. We look forward to celebrating the talent and dedication of our young musicians.
Congratulations again to all participants, and thank you for your continued support!
About the Competition
To foster musical talent in our community and give young musicians the valuable opportunity to perform as a soloist with an orchestra, the Hampton Roads Philharmonic is opening a portion of its season to feature a young soloist. Decided by an adjudicated competition, the winner will perform with the Hampton Roads Philharmonic as a featured soloist in March’s annual Young Artist Competition Showcase performance. This competition is open to instrumentalists up to age 21.
