Join the Orchestra

Hampton Roads Philharmonic welcomes dedicated volunteer musicians who want to perform major symphonic works, collaborate with strong community players, and help bring live orchestral music to audiences across Hampton Roads.

Current Openings

We are currently seeking the following auditions:

  • Bass

  • French Horn

All other instruments are encouraged to audition for future per-concert and substitute consideration.

Rehearsals

HRP rehearses on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in Newport News.

Musicians are expected to attend rehearsals regularly and be available for dress rehearsals and performances. The orchestra performs a mix of symphonic, holiday, pops, and community-focused programs throughout the season.

Auditions

Interested musicians should complete the online audition form and provide a brief professional bio or summary of playing experience.

Audition submissions should include recordings of two contrasting solo pieces that demonstrate tone, technique, rhythm, pitch, and overall musicianship. Recordings do not need to be professionally produced, but they should clearly represent the musician’s playing.

The audition form may be used for current openings, substitute consideration, and future performance opportunities.

Substitute and Future Consideration

Even if your instrument is not currently listed as an opening, HRP encourages interested musicians to submit an audition form.

The orchestra regularly considers musicians for substitute roles, expanded instrumentation, per-concert needs, and future openings. Submitting an audition form allows HRP to keep your information on file as needs arise.

Chamber Music Opportunities

Musicians may also indicate interest in HRP chamber ensembles. These smaller groups may support outreach, education, special events, and other community performances.
